Richard and Gaila have been married 35 years and reside near Traverse City, Michigan. From 1978 thru 1984 they traveled around the U.S., working odd jobs to support their travels, visiting 49 states. Their motto is "Life is an adventure", and their daughter, Maggie, has inherited this sense of adventure too and is living and working in Washington this summer. Dick's favorite past-time is backpacking and in 1999 he walked 3,200 miles from Mexico to Canada on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. In 2000 he continued hiking 600 more miles north to Jasper, Alberta with Gaila and Maggie as his support team. After publishing The Dick E. Bird News for 21 years, they have recently changed it into an on-line newspaper. Dick has also written two books - Birdfeeding 101 and Nuts About Squirrels, and together they co-authored Crossing the Divide, the story of their family adventure along the Continental Divide.
They do speaking engagements around the country on Birdfeeding 101, Squirrel Self-Defense, The Continental Divide Trail Adventure, General Backpacking and Long Distance Hiking. If you have an interest in one of these talks you can contact Gaila @ glmallery@gmail.com
